History and Benefits of Linden Tea

Linden Tea (Ihlamur Çayı) is a popular herbal tea in Turkey, made from the flowers of the linden tree. The linden tree, scientifically known as Tilia, belongs to the family Malvaceae and is mainly found in temperate and semi-tropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. There are over 20 species of linden trees, which can reach heights of 20 to 40 meters.

The history of linden tea dates back to ancient times and is mentioned in the writings of the Greek historian Herodotus. Linden trees were considered sacred in ancient civilizations, and it was customary to plant a linden tree for each child born to ensure a prosperous and fortunate life. In medieval Europe, linden trees held great importance in village life. They were often planted in the center of the village square, and the shade beneath the linden trees served as a meeting place for young people. Festivals, meetings, and even court sessions were held under the linden trees, earning them the nickname “Court Tree.”

BREWING LINDEN TEA

Linden tea can be brewed using two methods. In the first method, rinse the linden flowers thoroughly and place them in a teapot. Add clean water to the teapot and let it boil. Once boiled, remove the teapot from the heat and let the linden tea steep for about 15-20 minutes at room temperature. After steeping, the linden tea is ready to be enjoyed. In the second method, pour boiling water into a French press, add a handful of linden flowers, and let it steep for 10-15 minutes. You can add cinnamon, lemon, or honey to the French press or your cup for additional flavor if desired. It’s important to note that linden tea is best consumed in moderation, and it is recommended not to exceed 2-3 cups per day. Also, avoid consuming linden tea in the early and late hours of the day as it may interfere with sleep due to its relaxing properties.
